About This Item

STEINBERG, SAUL. (1914-1999). Romanian-American artist best known for his illustrations in The New Yorker. SP. ("Saul Steinberg"). 1p. Folio. N.p., N.d. A black-and-white Pach Brothers bust portrait of Steinberg signed in blue ink in Steinberg's idiosyncratic hand on the lower photographer's mount.

While studying architecture in Italy, Steinberg began his career as a cartoonist, contributing to European periodicals and publishing his first New Yorker drawing in 1941 while waiting for a visa to enter the U.S. His subsequent contribution to The New Yorker was immense and included hundreds of drawings, 85 covers and an unmistakable style that has since become synonymous with the publication. Although he was embraced by the art world, Steinberg never forsook magazine illustration, working for The New Yorker for almost six decades.

Founded in 1867, Pach Brothers was, until its closing in 1993, the nation's oldest photography studio.

In fine condition. Very rare in this format!
