New York: Garden City Publishing, 1938. Reprint Edition. Hardcover. Fair/Poor. Early reprint edition in maroon cloth with silver illustration and type. Bottom front corner dinged and others softened. Moisture stains to top of spine and adjacnet portion of front board, bottom of spine and adjacent portion of front panel and bottom front corner. Previous owner's name and address to ffep with moisture staining at top and bottom of front hinge and tanning - same to rear hinge. Bump to head of spine and small spot of fraying to heel. Top page ends tinted red. Binding solid. Jacket completely split at front panel and spine with split to top third of rear flap crease as well and two inch tear at head of spine. Moisture staining to spine, some adjacent portions of panels and top edges. Shipping at spine ends, corners and tops of panels. Abrasions to heel of spine.
Synopsis
An orphaned young woman working as a maid is swept off her feet by a wealthy widowed Englishman, and quickly married him. But when she arrives at his estate she learns she pales in comparison with his seemingly perfect deceased first wife Rebecca, especially in the eyes of the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers. When Rebecca’s body is found on her shipwrecked boat the dark secrets held by the husband are discovered as well. Rebecca has had many adaptations in film, radio, and television, the most famous being the Academy-Award Winning Hitchcock adaptation released in 1940. Du Maurier wrote the novel in a reported 4 months. Her publisher, Gollancz, expected the book to be successful and ordered 20,000 copies for the first print run. Within a month the novel had sold twice that.
