About This Item

1649. A Plea for Reform of the "Arbitrary" Chancery Courts Faldo, Thomas. Reformation of Proceedings at Law. By Way of Petition, Dedicated to the Honourable Committee of Parliament, For Reformation of Courts of Justice, And Proceedings at Law. [London]: Printed by Hen: Hils, 1649. [ii], 25, [1] pp. Quarto (6-3/4" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in recent quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt fillets and title to spine. Light toning, negligible light foxing to a few leaves, light soiling to title page and final leaf, trimming to top-edge just catching headline of two leaves without loss to page numbers. $1,250. * Only edition. As the seventeenth century saw a wave of anxiety over the role of the Court of Chancery, the topic of chancery reform became increasingly important. Faldo, a member of Gray's Inn, describes the system as arbitrary at best and corrupt at worst and suggests that the common law could better meet the needs the court was meant to address. OCLC locates 3 copies of this title in North American law libraries (Harvard, Columbia, Library of Congress). English Short-Title Catalogue R205978.
