About This Item

1950. (SOUTH CAROLINA REGIMENTAL). TANNER, W[illiam] R. Reminiscences of the War between the States. [Cowpens, SC]: 1931 [actually ca. 1950]. 2nd ed. 26 pp. Portrait. Orig. printed wrappers, housed in custom 3/4 green morocco and marbled board folding case. A fine copy. Almost as uncommon as the 1st ed.; OCLC locates only 11 copies of both editions combined. This edition bears the same narrative as the first, but with additions to the roll and list officers on pp. 23-26. The 13th South Carolina Infantry was present throughout the war in the Army of Northern Virginia, participating in most major battles including Gettysburg. The author was wounded at Five Forks and Sharpsburg, having entered as a private and achieving the rank of lieutenant. This privately printed work and Welch's Letters are the only eyewitness accounts of the history of this unit. The crudely printed pamphlet is filled with the author's euphemisms and misspellings, and his narrative is delightful. Dornbusch II, 927.
