Octavo, xiii, [1], 340pp. Original green publisher's cloth, title in gilt on spine. Red, white and blue trefoil on front cover. Complete with 23 illustrations, including frontispiece portrait with tissue cover. Previous ownership embossed on title page. Errata slip inserted at page 228. Light wear to top edge of spine, otherwise near fine. (Nevins II: 61) (Eicher 501) A bright example. Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) was an army officer, serving with distinction during the Mexican-American War and as a Union general during the Battle of Gettysburg. He was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880, but lost to Republican James A. Garfield.
