Boston: A. Williams & Co., 1862. First Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. 8vo. pp. 267, [1]. Period dark brown publisher’s cloth. Re-backed preserving the original spine. Board edges are carefully repaired; covers show some rubbing and spots of discoloration. Interior is generally clean with occasional small spots of foxing. A small chip is present on the outer edge of the title page; the front free end paper contains a larger chip. A case reference note is written in an early hand bellow the first part of the title on the title page. The inside front cover contains a small tag with handwritten initials. Published court transcript of the famous trial of George C. Hersey for the poisoning / murder of his sister-in-law to be Betsy Frances Tirrell (who was pregnant by him). Hersey was convicted and hanged. The preface claims that as of 1862 this book "is believed to be the only published trial for murder in which the presence of strychnine has been detected by chemical analysis in the body of the deceased.
