SIGNED tipped in compliments card by David Manning; [11.75x9.25in]; 147 pp., 16 plates, with 1 color and with 47 images and illustrations, many illustrations in text; Rebound with original dark blue cloth covers with new spine, all edges trimmed; Minor shelf wear to covers, front map misfold creases, minimal age toning to text, plates and illustrations are fine and most with original tissue guards. With the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, the Revenue Cutter Service (now the US Coast Guard) began voyages and surveys of Alaska with the Steamer 'Lincoln'. The US Thomas Corwin began regular cruises to the Arctic Ocean and Alaskan waters in 1880 from the San Francisco home port. She participated in the search for the USS Jeannette, rescues of shipwrecked whalers, explorations and support of local Inuit natives.
