About This Item

Cambridge University Press, 1990. First Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The return to their homeland of cultural treasures such as the Elgin Marbles has become in recent years a potent political issue. Joining a heated public debate conducted in general from partisan points of view, Jeanette Greenfield's extensively researched book offers the first measured assessment of a complex problem. Ranging over 60 countries and the activities of more than 100 institutions and collectors such as Aurel Stein and Andre Malraux, she reviews the historical, legal, and political issues involved and details many remarkable case histories. The Elgin Marbles, and in particular the 1816 House of Commons Select Committee Report on their purchase receive close scrutiny. The scope of the volume is, however much wider, and hominid finds from Africa, pre-Columbian art from the Americas and ethnographic materials from the author's native Australia are considered alongside the celebrated bronzes of Benin and the gold of Ashanti. Particular prominence is accorded to one notable recent case of cultural return, the group of Icelandic manuscripts including Flateyjarbok and the Codex Regius that were returned to Reykjavik from Denmark in 1971 after years of constitutional and legal arguments. The book's interdisciplinary approach and striking illustrations will attract a wide range of readers interested in museums, archaeology and anthropology, art history, and international law. For reference purposes, a set of 18 key international documents not readily available elsewhere is provided on three sheets of microfiche in rear pocket. Fine, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket.

About Joe Staats, Bookseller

Modern Literature, Mysteries, and More!
We specialize in collectible, contemporary signed first editions. First edition means the first printing. (Later printings of the first edition are typically not printed on acid-free paper, and should be avoided by collectors.) Signatures are obtained by us in person. Inscribed books sold by us may contain a line, a phrase, or a sketch that the author has chosen to add. Our signed books are not dedicated to anybody in particular (not to your grandmother, your Aunt Gladys, your ex-lover or your former cellmate), except in the rare case of a presentation copy from an author to a noteworthy person. All our books are hardcover, unless the book is an Advance Reading Copy, Uncorrected Proof, or PBO. You can expect that the books we send you will be as described, and in a physical condition worthy of the author’s having signed them. We do not sell remainder-marked books, signed or otherwise
