Description

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1959. First edition of the journalist and author's first novel. A WWII veteran returns to Sicily after the war to work as a geologist and search for his lost love. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on front endpaper, "To Colonel [Egbert] White/ the finest commanding officer/ of World War II/ from one of his sergeants and/ still his old paisan/ Herb Mitgang/ March 1959." During WWII, White (1894-1976) was in charge of the North African/Mediterranean edition of Stars and Stripes and Mitgang (1920-2013) was managing editor of the Oran-Casablanca and Sicily editions. Near fine in very good dust jacket with light staining to rear panel and front flap, few inconspicuous tears, and spine ends and corners lightly nicked and rubbed. Nice association inscription.
