About This Item

1638 ENGLISH 1ed Council of Trent Catholic Church Oxford FOLIO Ranchin Langbaine

The Council of Trent was an important ecumenical council during the mid-16th-century which has been described by multiple scholars as the epitome of the Counter-Reformation. It was prompted out of issues concerning heresy committed by Protestant doctrine based on justification, salvation, and most famously the Biblical canon.

French author Guillaume Ranchin published a report on the proceedings and theological decisions made over the course of the duration of the Council of Trent. This 1638 first English translation was edited by Gerard Langbaine, an English clergy of Oxford.
