About This Item
London, Richard Bentley, 1843. Two volumes, 8vo. Original ribbed maroon cloth, spines lettered in gilt, ornamented in blind; pp. [3], viii, 416; [3], viii, [2], 428; two lithographic frontispieces with tissue guards (one tinted, one hand coloured); two lithographic plates and two text illustrations in volume I, and two hand-coloured lithographic plates and four text illustrations in volume II; slight foxing; cloth lightly marked, and spines faded to beige; binding expertly recased. First edition. Mrs Romer, born in London, was a novelist, travel writer, and biographer. These two volumes follow her travels throughout France, Spain, and other Mediterranean islands, providing her first-hand impressions of these destinations. As Romer travels south, she provides interesting accounts of the Arab presence in this region in the chapter titled 'The Arab Dominion in Spain,' detailing the history of Arab rule in this area. Her accounts of the topography and weather conditions, as well as the culture surrounding the built environments in these areas in the mid-19th century makes for a highly interesting read.
