About This Item

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. A stand-alone novel of psychological suspense by Simenon, the mid-20th century French novelist best remembered for his series of internationally-praised mystery-crime novels featuring Police Inspector Maigret. This book features Lecoin, a rich man in a small French fishing village whose calm and peaceful existence is destroyed when his wife hires an orphan girl as a household servant, a young woman abused by her previous employer. Originally published in France in 1971, this Jean Stewart translation, the First Printing, First U.S. Edition, was issued in 1976. Red cloth boards show faint stain marks where the dustjacket was taped to the covers by previous owner. Back end page shows brown glue stain, with a faint "shadow" where the stain transferred to the dj's rear flap. O/w book and text are clean and unmarked, binding is tight. Primarily white dustjacket shows one-inch closed tear on front flap, minimal rubbing and soiling, surface wear and edgewear. No chipping or creasing, not price-clipped. . Good Plus. Hardcover. First Edition.. 1976.
