Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Various. 800 g; 488 pages, plus fold out map and 2 fold out genealogical charts, with 9 plates including a frontispiece and one figure in text. In original red cloth over boards, with the remains of a dustjacket which has numerous short tears and splits, and is now protected. The book itself show some dustiness to the top edge of the text block. Internally there does not appear to be any damage. This 3rd volume of the biography of Richelieu begins with the problem of Lorraine, from which the Cardinal feared invasion, and then proceeds to a account of France's military preparations and the beginnings of hostilities. Spain, whose powerful position had given her a stranglehold on France, is then studied in full, for Richelieu's principal aim was to remove this danger. -- Front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
