About This Item

Appears as if some water spilled on back the color bled thru, staining BPD & BLEP, slightest of toning, else content appears as unblemished with good red, cloth covered boards displaying minor surface/edge wear, as partially described above, stain at the bottom, & corner bump. Apparently rare. None found by this publisher

Kirkus Review: This was originally reported (see P. 180) for June publication. New scheduled to appear in August... Another historical novel, of great length and undoubted research, of the love of Ellery, a young English publisher, for Brielle, whom he met first as a refugee from Napoleon, and of the many reversals his suit underwent. First she fell in love with his career minded brother, Caradoc; then she returned to France and became an ardent admirer of the Emperor, married a turncoat Com, tried to rouse England to the dangers of invasion by Napoleon; he joined with Riding Bobby Wilson as war correspondent in the ular Campaign, then on to Russia where he met brielle again, was with her through the retreat from Mcow, had almost persuaded her to desert her ruler. In England again, Ellery is first to receive news of Napoleon's defeat by Wellington. He returns to France -- almost marries Gabrielle's cousin, but, is protesting brielle from the consequences of an ill-advised demonstrates at a Court performances, he knows that his first love is his last. He helps Wilson make a jail delivery of a French officers, trails Gabrielle and finally marries her. of European affairs from -1816, of campaigns, strategies, early reforms -- tightly plotted and smooth reading for all its length. The Napoleonic period hlds many for today -- hence its obvious popularity as background for a number of modern novels.
