About This Item

This is a unique "Teachers' Edition" of the classic "ROBINSON CRUSOE" - For Boys and Girls by Lida B. McMurry and Mary Hall Husted. 1902; Public-School Publishing Company; Bloomington, Illinois. Illustrated. The book is smaller in size - it measures 6 7/8" tall x 5 1/8" wide. At the back of the book is the poem "On His Island" by William Cowper, as well as the following Appendices: "The Educational Value of Robinson Crusoe"; "Method of Teaching Robinson Crusoe"; and "Robinson in His New Home." From the Preface: "This little book is the result of much experience in seeking to adapt the story of Robinson Crusoe to the literary attainments and educational needs of children in the primary schools. Crusoe is the transition from myths and fairy tales, where the imagination is untrammeled by the 'practical,' to the study of real biography. Those events in Defoe's story that are of doubtful educational value are omitted; but it is believed that the child's interest in the narrative is not impaired thereby. The language is that of children, and Robinson seems to be telling his story to them. It will prove to be valuable supplementary reading for classes in the second and third grades."

Condition:
Some light soiling to the covers. Tiny cloth tear at the top-right corner tip of the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks. The title page is present, but has detached. The text pages are lightly age-toned and clean with no foxing, stains or writing. Pages 41 & 43 each have a half-dime sized piece missing at the top edge. The front end paper has a tiny tear at the outer edge, and an old name written in pencil. Overall the book is in Good condition.
