About This Item

This is a beautiful copy of Robinson Crusoe, published as a luxury edition by Scribner's in 1984.

It is about a castaway who spends 28 years on a tropical desert island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals and mutineers before being rescued. It was first published in 1719 and is thought of as the first English-language novel. It remains one of the best-selling books in history.

Green boards with brilliant gold on the cover and spine.
The book is pristine, with no marks of any kind in it or on it.
The paper is lovely and creamy--and thick. It has large type, and there are 14 colour illustrations by the famed American illustrator N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945).

It weighs over 2 lbs--368 pages, 7 1/2" x 9 1/4" x 1 3/4"
Its only flaw is that the spine has become ribbed (see photo).
The dust jacket has minor shelf-wear and is starting to become discoloured on the inside. Also, it's a little too big for the book so it's not sitting precisely centered on the spine (printing error).
Otherwise, it's perfect.

Synopsis

Robinson Crusoe was first published in April 1719, in London. In the beginning, the story was published as an autobiography, but it was later established that the author was Daniel Defoe. The novel became an instant classic, with four editions printed in the first year of publication. Often called the first English novel, it follows the story of Robinson Crusoe, a man marooned on an island. Crusoe’s adventure-packed story of survival started the genre of realistic fiction and inspired a slew of other survival novels. Over the course of its publication history, Robinson Crusoe has become the second-most translated book in the world.
