Gelber, Lilienthal, Inc, 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-. One of 300 copies printed at the Grabhorn Press. This is the author's copy and it is inscribed to her husband, Frank Bennett, and SIGNED "Melba" by the author on the front endpaper. Bookplate of Frank Bennett is affixed to the front endpaper. The volume is edge rubbed with abrasions exposing the boards, has a gently sun toned spine, and there is a 3/4" split at the top of the front joint. The endpapers have some offsetting, and the text leaves are lightly age toned.

Illustrated by 8 plates plus the frontispiece portrait from a photograph of Jeffers by Edward Weston. Foreword by Una Jeffers. Octavo. Quarter bound in green morocco in orange decorated boards. From the author's Introduction: "This book, then, is not an explantion of the influence of the sea on Jeffers and his work, but rather is a questioning study of this interesting and significant phase of his talent, and a compilation of all materials pertaining to the sea contained in his poetry." Prior owners' bookplate at front pastedown; spine slightly faded; some toning to endpapers; 2" stain to lower right upper board; Very good or better overall, and now in a custom clear mylar protective jacket. Bound in quarter dark-green leather with patterned, papered sides; gilt lettering on spine. Internally clean and unmarked; some natural toning to endpapers. Foreword by Una Jeffers. Nine illustrated plates, including frontispiece portrait of Jeffers by Edward Weston. With original unprinted dustwrapper, which is chipped and cracked (very fragile, with hinge tissue holding it together on reverse); in an archival mylar sleeve. pp. xiv, 173, [2]. A study of Jeffers' work which focuses on his preoccupation with the sea and ''a compilation of all materials pertaining to the sea contained in his poetry,'' by Jeffers' ''secretary'' and biographer, Melba Berry Bennett (1901-1968).
