About This Item
London, printed for M.A. Rocque... A. Drury... and R. Sayer..., 1763. 8vo, pp. 136, [iv] + engraved folding map with original hand colour in outline, Kitchins most accurate map of the roads of England and Wales, trivial stain in bottom right corner, imprint of Andrew Drury. Contemporary mottled sheep, joints and headcaps renewed. Contemporary ownership signature of Catherine Cornwalle. Invoice from Charles Traylen dated 1946 loosely inserted. The map appeared in the London Magazine in the same year, with Thomas Kitchin credited as the engraver in the bottom right hand margin, and without Drurys imprint. John Rocque, who played a leading role in revitalising English cartography in the mid 18th century, had died in 1762 and this work appeared under the imprint of his widow, Mary Ann. Andrew Drury moved in the same Huguenot circles, and Robert Sayer (who was still toward the beginning of a long and successful career) had previously worked with both John Rocque and Drury.
