About This Item

Elsevier-Phaidon, Oxford, first edition, 1977. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm,. 149 pp, plates. From the blurb: "The world of Classical Rome is here vividly described through the medium of its surviving monuments. After an introductory chapter on Roman civilization, the author traces the history of antiquarianism through the Renaissance to the development of Roman archaeology in the present day. Chapters follow on the Etruscans-'that not-so-mysterious people'-the Romans in Italy, from the foundation of the City till the second century AD, and their expansion abroad - at its widest extent from Morocco in the west to Armenia ia the east and from Britain in the north to Upper Egypt in the south. Visual stories display the work of the Renaissance painter Mantegna seen in the light of his Classical models; the spectacular contents of the Etruscan tombs at Cerveteri; the site of Pompeii, its frescoes and then-influence on European and American interior decoration since their discovery in the eighteenth century; and the drama of spectator sports in the Roman world. Very Good in a somewhat yellowed and slightly torn price-clipped dustwrapper.
