Booth Mooney, was a close fried and biographer of the late President Johnson and author of a number of other books, including "Roosevelt and Rayburn: A Political Partnership," and "The Politicians: 1945 to 1980.". In 1953, Johnson, who was then serving in the Senate, called Mr. Mooney to Washington to be his executive assistant and speech writer. Mr. Mooney served in that position until 1958. During that period, Mr. Johnson was Senate minority and then majority leader. While working for Johnson, Mr. Mooney wrote the biography, "The Lyndon Johnson Story." A slightly revised edition of it was published shortly after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, and was translated into more than 40 languages. It was considered then to be the best source of information on the life and character of the new President, This is about one of the most powerful partnership in American political history--and one of the most remarkable--united two men whose backgrounds were as dissimilar as their personalities. Roosevelt was a wealthy aristocrat and Rayburn was a poor Texas farm boy. The basis for this unlikely alliance was a simple one. Both men were determined to pull the nation out of the despair of the Depression, and Rayburn, particularly sensitive to the plight of the poor, saw Roosevelt's New Deal as the only hope. The Texan's strength in the House of Representatives, as head of the powerful Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee, pushed the New Deal legislation through, and the bond between the two men was firmly cemented.
