Richard L Neuberger is the author of another in the Landmark series -- The Lewis and Clark Expedition. This tells the story of The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, from their early days when there were only about 150 men in the entire force. In 1873, the Northwest Territory was a wild region of more than a million square miles, and wandering bands of criminals terrorized the settlers. One desperado boasted he was the boss of the town and ''no soldier was going to lock him up.'' But he and many others like him soon learned that the redcoated Mounties seemed to be everywhere, They rarely fired a shot; instead, they used their heads and now and then their fists.
