A first edition work containing a description of travels through Russia, written by Laurence Oliphant after he left his legal studies in the early 1850s, in the original rebacked cloth binding with folding plates and illustrated engravings. First Edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece as well as two folding maps and thirty-three in-text engravings.In the original cloth binding, which has been rebacked with new endpapers.This is a travel work by Laurence Oliphant, which provides topographical description of the author's travels along the Russian shores of the Black Sea in 1852.This work chronicles the point in which Oliphant left his legal studies in order to travel within Russia. Contents include 'St Petersburg', 'Volga steam-tugs', 'Russian notions of political economy', and 'First discoverers of the Volga'. Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888) was a South African-born British author, traveller, diplomat, and Christian Zionist. His best known work is the satirical novel 'Picadilly', as well as his plan to create Jewish farming communities in the Holy Land.Eight pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of text.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, which has been rebacked with new endpapers. Externally, very smart. Light bumping to the extremities and a few marks to the boards, particularly the rear board. Light spotting to text block. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot, which increases to the first and last few pages, and light age-toning to the margins. Folding map to rear is lightly spotted. Very Good
