About This Item

Boston: Western Islands - The Americanist Library, 1965. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. 323 Pages Indexed. This is the 1965 Americanist Library edition of the 1960 copyright. Tight square book with some light age-tanning to page edges and borders. Otherwise a tight square book with no marks or stamps. In the Sacco-Vanzetti case there two crimes; an unsuccessful holdup in Bridgewater, for whch Vanzetti, but not Sacco, was tried at Plymouth, and the South Braintree murders, for which both were tried at Dedham. The attempted holdup occurred December 24, 1919. A payroll amounting $33,113 was being carried from the Bridgewater Trust Company to the White Shoe Factory ina Ford truck manned bfy the driver, the paymaster, and the paymaster's guard. En route three men got out from a parked car rushed the truck and began firing. The guard and the paymaaster returned the shots. No one was hit, nothing was stolen, and the truck moved on. In the South Brainatree murder case in April 1920 the paymaster and a guard were killed while carrying a payroll of more than $15,000 between two bfuilding of the Slater Morrill Shoe Factory. Three men picked up the boxes of cash and left the scene fo the murders. Sacco and Vanzetti were found guilty of murder and after the controversial trial and a series of appeals they were executed in 1927. There is a highly politicized dispute over their guilt and over whether the trials were fair. There was contradictory evidence and there has been no concensus as of 2010.
