About This Item
New York: The Literary Guild, 1936. Reissue. Hardcover. Very Good/good. sunning to spine and covers, previous owner's personal bookplate to front endpaper, pgs. 167-172 dog-eared; jacket sunned, especially spine which also shows staining, tips chipped, corners and edges worn, a few short closed tears. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾". Hard Cover. From Wikipedia: "Historians began to criticize this book shortly after its publication. One issue, as indicated in the quotation above, was that Ms. Sackville-West often created many details by engaging in personal speculation. This sometimes included subjects for which documented evidence does exist, but which the author either deliberately ignored or was unaware of....And yet, as a whole, Ms. Sackville-West's treatment of her subject shows a great deal of sympathy and respect. In fact, even her harshest critics[who?] generally qualify the book as being one of the most readable treatments of the Joan of Arc story, as the author was a professional and successful novelist." Books and other items ship promptly with a tracking number and (generally over $15.00) jacket protectors if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible. The Book Shed has a been a member of the Vermont Antiquarian Bookseller's Association since 1997.

Well written and - surprisingly - with no obvious political agenda, but Vita Sackville-West occasionally skydives to conclusions without a parachute. For example: V. S.-W. interprets one witness's testimony as meaning that they thought they had some mystical means of determining whether a girl was a virgin. Not necessarily. The testimony could just as well mean that the witness thought that she could tell from Joan's behavior that Joan was a virgin.
