Book condition: Very good, clean grey boards, firm binding, no inscriptions. Jacket condition: Very good, clean, bright, not faded, not creased, not clipped. Comments: The story of the under-sea search for the wreck of HMS Birkenhead, lost off the South African coast in 1852, and the historic artefacts recovered. The ship was one of the first iron-hulled warships powered by steam and sail. The actions of the Captain and his crew saving many of the women on board created the "women and children first" principle for later sinkings; many of the crew and soldiers subsequently killed by shark attacks. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
