About This Item
No Place Stated: A. R. Tommasini. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1970. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Bump to head of spine, possibly in the making. Light toning to the very edges of the boards, common to this edition.; A selection of verse fragments from John Greenleaf Whittier's classic Snow-Bound : A Winter Idyl. Printer Tommy Tommasini chose fragments that described scenes that the family in this narrative poem would have witnessed. Whittier's poem, in total, describes a family's conversations inside a snowed-in New England farmhouse. The verse fragments are accompanied by the linoleum engravings of Czech-born artist George Kuthan. His Prague and Paris studies in graphic arts, printmaking, and painting served him in Canada where he taught printmaking at university level, and incorporated etching and both wood- and linoleum-engraving into his graphic arts and books. His works in this book are sympathetic to the verse fragments and are boldly styled. One of an unnumbered, limited edition of 200. Essentially, a reprint of Tommasini's 1962 seasonal keepsake edition, but in an oblong 16mo 6 1/4" x 7" size. The oblong dimensions allowed a more balanced page design with Kuthan's linoleum engravings beside the verses, instead of above. "This keepsake was designed, handset, printed, and bound by A. R. Tommasini in September 1970. The type face is 14-point Goudy Village No. 2. The presswork was done on a 10 x 15 Chandler & Price platen press. Two hundred copies have been printed on Strathmore Pastelle White for members of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, and the Zamorano Club of Los Angeles." Bound in textured paper over boards, dark brown title to spine, and the front featuring a green Kuthan linocut of a snowy roof and tree. Presenting a straightforward, uncluttered design, this is a clean, about Near Fine book in its Near Fine, original mylar wrapper.; Linocuts; Oblong 16mo 6" - 7" tall; [4],23,[2] pages .
