From the DJ flaps:
The history of Scotland is like its landscape—full of peaks and valleys, of ruggedness and grandeur, of gentleness and calm splendor. Its story is inextricably linked with its larger neighbor England, but is completely individual. Although joined by the union of the crowns in the form of James VI of Scotland who became James I of England, there is no doubting Scotland's unique and special place in history. From Bannockburn to Braveheart, Bonnie Prince Charlie to Rabbie Burns, the Scots have proved to be a people whose character and ability have made their world influence disproportionate to the size of their country. This book looks at the many facets of Scotland from its Crown Jewels to its stunning geography and scenery.
Part One surveys the geography and geology of the country: the myriad islands of the Shetlands, Orkneys and Hebrides; the Highlands — Torridon, Ben Nevis and Glencoe, the Cairngorms; the urban areas of central Scotland — Glasgow aid Edinburgh; the rolling Borders, and all the lochs and glens that give Scotland such a variety of scenery.
Part Two reviews Scotland's history, starting with the earliest Stone Age hunter-gatherers through the megalith builders, to the Celts, Romans, Norsemen — who ruled much of northern Scotland and the islands until the 13th century — and then the Normans, whose descendants on the English throne would batter away at Scotland's gates, until they were united under one crown. Scotland's history then became one of rebellions — the '15 and '45 — and repression until the Industrial Revolution saw Scottish investors and builders come into their own: the British Empire allowed their natural talents as soldiers and leaders to bring them to the fore.
Part Three deals with the arts, and outstanding cultural heritage — the Celtic legacy, Rabbie Burns and Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Rennie Macintosh, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and, more recently, Compton Mackenzie.
After a brief taste of what makes a Scot — Highland Games and Haggis! — a chronology rounds off this colorful tribute to a nation.
