A first edition of this fictional work by Thomas Hughes, bound in splendid decorative cloth and illustrated by Richard Doyle. A novel focused on the White Horse of Uffington, Berkshire, and the customs and celebrations of locals relating to it.Written by Thomas Hughes (1822-1896), an English lawyer and author best known for 'Tom Brown's School Days'.The first edition of this work.With illustrations by Richard Doyle throughout.Bound in decorative cloth, with gilt detail to the borders and spine. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with just a little wear to the head and tail of the spine, and bumping to the extremities. Internally, binding is rather tender; half title and the front endpaper are loose but present, as is page 31 & 32, which has a large tear through it and some slight loss to the bottom affecting the text. Pages have just the odd spot. Good Only
