About This Item
Special Illustrated Edition. "When invited to write a preface for this special edition of Screwtape my mind was carried back to the inexpressibly happy period that I spent as C. Lewis's private secretary. Though Lewis was quite ill at this time, he always, after his housekeeper had cooked the meal, sent her home to be with her husband. It hadn't occurred to me who might be washing the dishes, till, on the evening I moved into his house, I followed him into the kitchen and found him in the scullery up to his arms in soap-suds. He, sensing that I was astounded to discover that the author of The Screwtape Letters also washed dishes, said, laughing, "If ever you tell others what it is like in this house, you must say that not only are the servants soft underfoot but invisible as well."
Synopsis
The Screwtape Letters is a work of Christian apologetics by C. S. Lewis, first published in book form in 1942. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior demon, Screwtape, to his nephew, a junior tempter named Wormwood, so as to advise him on methods of securing the damnation of an earthly man, known only as "the Patient. The novel was dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien, and is among one of Lewis' most popular works.
