About World of Books Ltd West Sussex, United Kingdom

Biblio member since 2007

In 2002, World of Books was founded on an ethos to do good, protect the planet, and support charities by enabling more goods to be reused. Since then, we've grown into a global pioneer, dedicated to helping people read more and waste less. Through the World of Books brand, customers can now buy and sell with us! We provide affordable, preloved books to book lovers all around the world, while also giving people the opportunity to contribute to the circular economy, earn money and protect the planet by trading in their unwanted books and media for cash. Through the B2B side of our business we've developed technology to help charities sell in bulk, meaning they can clear much needed floor space and make money for great causes at the same time. A new book will be sold once but their stories can be enjoyed by more than one owner. After all, a story doesn't change because it's been read before!

Reader reviews for The Second World War (5): The Eastern Front 1941-1945: v.2 (Essential Histories)

From the publisher

In 1940, fresh from the success in France, Hitler turned his attention to the East. In this volume Geoffrey Jukes explains what led to Hitler's decision to instigate the invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa) and offers a concise account of the campaign that followed. The Germans expected to conquer Russia in only four months, but at Stalingrad and then Kursk the Russians fought back. At a human cost of 27 million Soviet lives Hitler was forced into a humiliating retreat and Russia emerged from the war as a super power ready to take on the capitalist world.

First line

In 1935 Hitler repudiated the Versailles Treaty and reintroduced conscription, and in 1936 he reoccupied the demilitarized Rhineland.

About the author

After leaving Oxford in 1953 Geoffrey Jukes spent 14 years in the UK Ministry of Defence and Foreign and Colonial Office, specialising in Russian/Soviet military history, strategy and arms control. From 1967 to 1993 he was also on the staff of the Australian National University. He has written five books and numerous articles on the Eastern Front in the two World Wars.
