About This Item
Auburn, NY: N.p., 1847. First edition. 23x15cm, [3], 16pp. Saddle stitched, self-wrappers show some staining with light foxing throughout. Few bent corners. Nicely preserved and very good.
Uncommon anti Odd Fellows tract, a good example of the 19th century movement by the Catholic and other conservative churches against Masons, Odd Fellows, Sons of Temperance and other secret societies. Jay S. Backus (1810-1879) was a Baptist minister, evangelist, and editor of The New York Chronicle, which later became The Examiner.
This discourse was later reprinted, along with a response from Rev. H. B. Kenyon as Backus and Kenyon on Secret Societies, in Albany, 1850, which is found in Sabin (2636). However, we find no mention of this original printing. OCLC locates 3 copies.
