"Karl Groos (1861-1946) was a psychologist who proposed an evolutionary instrumentalist theory of play. His 1898 book on The Play of Animals tried to persuade educators that play is a preparation for later life. It's suggested that his theory is based on the beliefs of Charles Darwin as he believed that when animals 'play' they are practising basic instincts, such as fighting, for survival. The author calls this book "selected lectures," and explains that it is by no means an exhaustive, systematic treatise on the mental life of the child, but that certain aspects of child psychology receive fuller and more detailed treatment than would be possible in a systematic work of equal length. The latter part of the book, dealing with apperception, recognition, conception, judgment and reasoning." Owner's ex libris plate on front pastedown. Slightly frayed at bottom fore-edge corners with minor edge wear to top and bottom edges spine, and fainttly age-toned text block edges. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Grayish-green illustrated cloth with silver lettering to front board and spine, and decorative endpapers..
