About This Item

Venezia: Presso Giambattista Novelli. Very Good-. 1774. Hardcover. lxii, 369 pages; Text block clean and tight in contemporary full sheepskin binding with gilt decoration at spine and red leather spine label. Spine leather has a 1/16 inch scrape near center and a chip at lower end (3/4" x 1/2"), still an attractive 18th century book. Edizione novissima corretta, e migliorata. An interesting 18th century work on the form and substance of administrative and diplomatic correspondence. Gasparo, Count Gozzi (1713 – 1786) was a Venetian critic and dramatist. In 1747 he and his wife poet Luisa Bergalli took over the management of the theatre of Sant' Angelo in Venice. Gozzi supplied most of the dramas (usually translated from French). The theatre was a financial failure, but launched Gozzi on a successful career as a writer and dramatist. In 1760, Gozzi established the Gazzetta Venta, an Italian publication similar to the Spectator in England. This and his later publication L'Osservatore Veneto established Gozzi as a consummate critic and one of the most elegant stylists in Italy. Consequently, this volume on composition was an important and influential work.; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. .
