About This Item

[London]: [A. & C. Black], 1900. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5". Not Stated. A unique set of Edgar Allan Poe's works compiled in three volumes by Bernard Coleridge, the 2nd Baron Coleridge. Inscribed 'Coleridge, 1900', to the recto of the front free endpapers. A unique set of Poe's works.Bernard Coleridge, 2nd Baron Coleridge, compiled this work. Coleridge was a lawyer and politician, sitting in the House of Commons as a Liberal from 1885 to 1894, when he inherited his peerage. His grandfather, John Taylor Coleridge, as the nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Coleridge compiled this unique set, taking the collected works of Poe, published by A. & C. Black, and binding them in these three volumes, with his own hand-drawn and hand-written title pages and contents pages detailing the order in which the works are bound. Coleridge has stated to the title page 'the purpose of this selection is to include only such work as exhibits Poe's rare genius in full measure'. Presumably Coleridge took out the works which he thought did not show Poe's genius and the best of his abilities. This A. & C. Black set was originally bound in four volumes, however Coleridge's compiled set is only three volumes. Coleridge has crossed out the original pagination and written in ink his own pagination for each volume. The original A. & C. Black pagination as bound in these volumes run as;Volume I: 195, 189-216, 116-126, 266-272, 179-199, 333-354, 371-387, 251-265, 297-302, 168-178, 200-215, 127-137, 236-250, 373-393, 217-233, 279-296, 364-370ppVolume II: 197-278, 312-318, 332-507, 520-534, 351-372, 216-235, 401-418, 481-489, 1-38, 404-513ppVolume III: 1-188, 150-167, 138-149, 39-107, 314-323, 335-350, 265-277, 273-278, 303-332, 279-285pp, xcixDated from the ink inscription. The collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, a collection of the American author's poetry and short stories, most importantly containing his tales of mystery and the macabre.Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. In the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Spines and joints are lightly faded. Minor bumping to the spines and extremities, a little heavier to the head of the spine of Volume I. A few minor marks to the boards and spines, with a damp stain to the front boards of Volumes I and II and to the rear board of Volume III. Light spots to the fore edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Page 139/140 of Volume III is detached with edge wear. Good
