About This Item

London: Oxford University Press; Humphrey Milford I am offering two works by John Ruskin in one volume: "Sesame and Lilies" (two lectures) and "The Ethics of Dust" (ten lectures). The book was published by Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, London. The book is not dated, but someone has written in pencil on the free rear end paper "Apr. 25, 1947, Brentano's, $1.10." The book does not have a dust jacket, but a small piece of the original dust jacket flap, showing John Ruskin's portrait, has been attached to the rear end paper. This 224-page hardback is in very good condition, clean, and tightly bound. About a dozen pages have neat, ruled underlining. It is a small volume, measuring 4 inches by 6 inches. It is on a stamped blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. See photo.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Chap Book.

Synopsis

John Ruskin’s Sesame and Lilies (1865) consists of two lectures, “Of Kings’ Treasuries” and “Of Queens' Gardens,” delivered in December 1864 at the town halls at Rusholme and Manchester. While these lectures emphasize the connections between nature, art and society, they are essentially concerned with education and ideal conduct. The first half of the original work, “Of Kings’ Treasuries,” is a critique of Victorian manhood. The second half, “Of Queens' Gardens,” counsels women to be moral guides and urges parents to educate them as such. Although Sesame and Lilies was widely popular in its time, the work in its entirety has been out of print since the early twentieth century.
