Fully illustrated by Pogany with illustrated title page, 20 tipped-in colour plates, scores of other mono and two colour illustrations printed in light green and mauve, some full page, and calligraphic text, all within decorative borders, all illustrated or written by Pogany. A fine copy in the scarce publishers deluxe burgundy coloured suede binding with yapp edges. Lovely bright and clean gilt decoration and lettering to the front board. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Original illustrated end papers. A fine and truly handsome copy of this classic work and a remarkable survivor. The suede bindings of this period are fragile and prone to drying out, often resulting in the suede perishing and the yapp edges splitting. Rare in this condition.

Complete with all 59 (13 folding) hand-coloured botanical plates (No. 7033-7092).
All plates drawn by talented woman botanical artist Matilda Smith, lithographed by John Nugent Fitch.
Includes many exotic flowers and plants including the licuala, pandan, broad thatch and carludovica palm trees, blue bird of paradise flower, prickly pear, sarsaparilla, dragon tree, stapelia, Australian stinging tree and the voodoo lily, Amorphophallus eichleri. There are several orchids including Dendrobium, Sobralia, Spathoglottis, Catasetum, Arachnis, Phaius, etc., as well as new hothouse and garden species of iris, lily, passionflower, delphinium, etc.
The dynamic illustrations of flowers and leaves take up the whole plate, and are crammed with details of the seeds and fruits, and often feature a sketch of the entire plant in the background. The influence of mentor Walter Hood Fitch is undeniable.

A rare suite of all 30 plates in both hand-coloured and uncoloured states.Total of 91 etchings: 1 set of 30 hand-coloured plates and 2 sets of 30 uncoloured plates, plus portrait of Sardou.The etchings by A. Guillaumot Fils (Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr.) were made from theatrical costume designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner for productions of the comic opera Les Merveilleuses (The Lady Dandies) (1873) by Sardou. The costumes were based on contemporary prints from the Revolutionary era.
Suites of the second edition with 30 etched plates, following the first with only 20 plates in 1874.
