Tokyo: Kodansha, 1962. First edition, #477 of 2000. Fine. 40 cm; plate volume ([7] pages and 94 tipped-in color plates, many folding, many with tissue guards) and text volume (98 pages, with black-and-white illustrations). Plate volume bound in cream-colored cloth, text volume in wraps, both volumes enclosed in original black cloth clamshell case stamped in gilt with eight-pointed spiral.
First volume in the series Nikuhitsu ukiyoe ("Ukiyoe Paintings", literally, "Hand-drawn Ukiyoe", as opposed to prints. Fine large color reproductions of early Ukiyoe-style paintings from the late Muromachi (1333-1568), Momoyama (1568-1600), and early- to mid-Edo period (1600-1868), many showing details of large paintings on folding screens. A half-size (20 cm) paperback reprint edition published in 1965 is more common. The artists represented in the portfolio include:
