About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus, and Young, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher’s red cloth with titles in gilt to spine; original off-white dust jacket with titles in black and red. Near fine with light toning to text block edges and head of spine, spine gilt slightly dimmed; very good unclipped dust jacket with light fading and light soiling to spine, a hint of soiling to front panel, and some minor tape repair to verso, head of spine and top of rear panel. Overall, a pleasing copy. The Shores of Light, a compilation of Wilson’s writings, captures the literary landscape of America in the early 20th century. The types of writing are wonderfully varied and include essays, reviews, dialogues, satires, letters, sketches, and jeux d’esprit. Some of the titles are: “Burlesque Shows,” “Emergence of Ernest Hemingway,” “Virginia Woolf and the American Language,” and “American Critics, Left and Right.” The final piece in the collection, “Epilogue, 1952: Edna St. Vincent Millay,” is Wilson’s poignant reflection on the poet after her death, with whom he had had a close relationship.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
