About This Item
Auburn, 1809. unbound. 4 pages (front and back), 12.75 x 8.25 inches, Auburn, New York, 1809. In this document, Hughes reaffirms his ownership of a parcel of land he purchased from "Charles McKinney of the 2nd New York Regiment, commanded by Col. Phillip Van Cortlandt, for the consideration of 8 pounds...by Peter Hughes." Spotting and foxing; several closed tears. Good condition.

Hughes amassed tremendous holdings of New York real estate through collusion, literally waiting for Revolutionary War veterans to enter Debtor's Court. Exceptional example of the land-grab period that deprived veterans of valuable real property, surrendered to the wealthy.
