About This Item
Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1866. Leather bound. Very good. 3 vols.: 324; 328; 324 p. 20 cm. Numerous b&w illustrations of stamps, envelopes, etc. Green half leather with marbled boards. A little wear to top and bottom edges. Former owner's labels in front endpapers. Endpapers foxed in first two volumes but most of text clean. Pages 283 - 303 of vol. II show some stains at bottom edge. Still nice neat little volumes.
Though written with Lever's usual sharp humour, this is one of the least known of his novels. The story starts in the mess room of a regiment stationed in Dublin; the caustic conversation of the military men is typical of the Lever style.
