About This Item
Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Alban (1561 – 1626) was an English philosopher and statesman who served as Attorney General, as Lord Chancellor of England and as legal advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. His works are credited with developing the scientific method and remained influential through the scientific revolution.
Bacon argued for the possibility of scientific knowledge based only upon inductive reasoning and careful observation of events in nature. Most importantly, he argued science could be achieved by use of a skeptical and methodical approach whereby scientists aim to avoid misleading themselves. Although his practical ideas about such a method, the Baconian method, did not have a long-lasting influence, the general idea of the importance and possibility of a skeptical methodology makes Bacon the father of the scientific method.
Bacon published three volumes of essays; the last contained 58 essays—all are contained in this book. It also contains his famous The New Atlantis, an incomplete novel about a utopian land where "generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendour, piety and public spirit" are the commonly held qualities of the inhabitants."
