About This Item

London: Bell & Daldy, 1863. Cloth. Very Good. 5.5" by 4". None. A smart, pocket sized edition of the collected songs of Robert Burns. A charming, pocket size edition of the songs of eighteenth century Scottish poet Robert Burns. As well as constructing his own original compositions, Burns worked to collect and preserve folk songs from across Scotland, often revising, expanding or adapting them. In letters he explained that he preferred simplicity in his songs, relating them to spoken language and insisting they should be sung in traditional ways. The best known song with which Burns is associated is, of course, 'Auld Lang Syne'.With a two page publisher's advertisement for further pocket volumes to the rear. With the contemporary owner's inscription of Vera Harvey, Newport, to the half title, and the binder's stamp of 'Bone & Son' to the rear pastedown. In the original cloth binding. Light shelf wear to spine head and tail. Front hinge starting, and detaching from text block towards tail. Binder's stamp to rear pastedown. Contemporary inscription to half title. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with the odd spot. Very Good
