About This Item

London: Brentano's, 1924. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 8" by 5.5". None. The first edition of Ronald Firbank's tale of a black family's attempts at social climbing in the Caribbean in the very scarce original dust wrapper. The first edition of this work, no. 170 of 1000 copies printed in the first edition, and complete with the very scarce unclipped publisher's original dust wrapper.Set in an unnamed Caribbean republic, a socially ambitious black family move from their rural home to the capital, with the novel following their attempt to enter 'society'. The work was especially successful in America, where it was renamed 'Prancing Nigger' at the suggestion of the publisher. The work of innovative British novelist Ronald Firbank. Significantly inspired by Oscar Wilde, Firbank's novels consisted largely of dialogue, with references to religion, social-climbing, and sexuality. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped original dust wrapper. Externally, lovely, with minor shelf wear to back strip head and tail, and a light mark to front board. Significant losses to dust wrapper back strip head and tail, with losses to tail of rear wrap, and chipping to dust wrapper perimeters. Discolouration to back strip, and fading to front wrap. Very Good Indeed
