Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front endpaper. Inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Charles Evans Hughes / Secretary of State - With profound respect and devotion. Franklin H. Martin." The recipient of this copy, Charles Evans Hughes, had a lengthy legal education with a deep involvement in politics. He was an unsuccessful presidential candidate in the 1916 election against Woodrow Wilson, but was later appointed Secretary of State by President Warren G. Harding in 1921.
