"The Spirit of '76" - Some Recollections of the Artist and the Painting by Henry Kelsey Devereux. 1926; The Arthur H. Clark Company; Cleveland, Ohio. Limited edition of only 500 copies published. The pages were printed on "Alexandra handmade paper." Originally titled "Yankee Doodle," "The Spirit of '76" was painted by Archibald M. Willard for exhibit during the 1876 Philadelphia centennial celebrations. It's considered one of America's most iconic paintings. The contents are as follows: Archibald M. Willard, a Brief Sketch; The Fifer - Hugh Mosher; The Drummer Boy - Henry Kelsey Devereux; An Early Account by J.F. Ryder; The Preliminary Sketches and Replicas. The book features a color frontispiece of the painting, photographs of Willard, Mosher, Devereux and Reverend Samuel Willard (who posed for the central figure in the painting), and illustrations of Willard's original conception for the painting, and his final preliminary crayon study sketch.

Condition:
Some very light soiling to the covers. Small stain on the spine label. There is a 1/3" cloth tear at the top-right corner of the spine. Light wear at the cover corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only a few randoms foxing spots. Page 79 has a few small tears at the outer edge. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.
