Illustrated with coloured frontispiece and one hundred and forty in-text engravings from ancient manuscripts. A detailed account of the sports and pastimes enjoyed by the people of England, including the rural and domestic recreations, May games, mummeries, shows, processions, pageants, and pompous spectacles from the earliest period to contemporary time. Written by Joseph Strutt, an English engraver, artist, writer, and antiquary remembered as an "influential but totally neglected figure in the history of art in Britain" - Sir Roy Strong. Edited by William Hone, an English writer and bookseller. In the original full green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities.
