Edition printed in July 1959. Purple cloth boards, decoratively stamped on the front cover in red and (now darkened) yellow. Illustrated endpapers. Short inscription on front pastedown, else clean. Lovely color illustrations throughout. Dust jacket faded along spine; chips at head of spine and to fore-edge of rear panel; in an archival mylar sleeve. 83 pages. 28.5 x 22.5 cm. Scarce 1959 edition. The author, Vladimir Ivanovich Dal (1802-1872), was a Russian folklore collector, lexicographer, and friend of Alexander Pushkin. Illustrated by the graphic artist Vladimir Konashevich (1888-1963).
