About This Item

Atlanta, Ga.: Johnson-Dallis Co., 1923. xvi, [2], 277 pages, including index, plus frontispiece and 23 plates. Original brown cloth with cover illustration and lettering in gold. [20.4 cm.] Ex-Sondley Reference Library with no external markings and light internal signs: tasteful bookplate on front pastedown and embossed stamp on three leaves including title. Else near very good. Light discoloration near base of spine and very faint stain on front cover along hinge. Occasional, very slight foxing to gutters. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, to unnamed recipient, on the front free endpaper. It reads: "This page is inscribed to one of the most cherished of my friends, a statesman without stain, a gentle man without reproach, and a lover of all the muses. Lucian Lamar Knight, Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 11, 1924." A possible clue to the identity of the recipient appears in the gutter of the dedication leaf in the form of a penciled note indicating the volume was purchased from "Dr. Owen's library" in 1939. Lucian Lamar Knight was Georgia's state historian, founder of the state archives, and literary editor of the Atlanta "Constitution." He was also a popular orator and a several of his addresses are included in this volume. The title poem was inspired by the ongoing effort, described in the foreword, to have a Confederate memorial carved on the side of Stone Mountain.
