First edition in English, sixth printing, uncommonly signed twice by the author: on the front free endpaper dated 10 April 1940 and on the front panel of the dust jacket. On first publication, this collection featured many stories in English for the first time. The volume, comprising 24 stories written from 1896 to 1929, includes the famous "Tonio Kröger", "Tristan", "Disorder and Early Sorrow", "A Man and His Dog", "Mario and the Magician", and the novelette "Death in Venice". Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, titles to front cover in blind, publisher's device in blind to rear cover, top edge red. With pictorial dust jacket. A good copy, rubbing to edges, a few white marks to spine and boards, foxing to edges, offsetting to endpapers, small dampstain to top edge and bottom edge, encroaching on margins of most leaves, text unaffected, in good dust jacket, foxed and dampstained, extremities chipped.
