Includes 18 pages of historical notes on the Conclave of Perugia, Pope Boniface VIII, and the treatment of Celestine by Dante and Petrarch. 8vo, brown paper over boards with lighter brown cloth quarter, black lettering on spine, blind-stamped colophon, dark olive end papers, rough-cut fore-edge, foxing to edges spills onto some page margins, little shelf wear. Pencil marks in margin on approximately 10 pages of the introductory chapters. Laid-in newspaper clipping of review by Irving Howe of a different one of Silone's books, Emergency Exit.
